USDA programming helped facilitate market access efforts for U.S. seed and fresh potatoes in Guatemala, aiding negotiations to move forward to a resolution. In May 2018, Guatemala simplified its phytosanitary certificate requirements. The new protocol no longer places state-by-state limitations on U.S. potato exports, with the result that U.S. fresh and seed potatoes from all U.S. states are now permitted entry into Guatemala, expanded from five states. The move opens the door for further increases in US potato exports to the country.
